day 23

Our new mice are warming up to us. Nole was running on the wheel for a while. Spoon still seems very skittish, and will often dart away at any sudden movement from us.

"Breaking Bad" did really well in the Emmy's. Bryan Cranston took home the Emmy for best lead actor in a drama for the third year in a row. Impressive, considering powerhouses like Hugh Laurie and Michael C. Hall were in his competition. Also Aaron Paul won his first Emmy for best supporting actor in "Breaking Bad".

day 22

We picked up four new "children" (mice) today. They are named: Nole, Skillet, Spoon, and Whiskers (Whisk for short). Alicia also purchased a small female rat on Thursday named Sewer. We now have a colony of mice and our three tanks are full again.

day 21

Today I attempted to experience Little Rock's nightlife. The first place we attended was a cool "rockin" piano bar. Unfortunately, we got there very late and the place was closing 20 minutes after we got there. Then we headed over to the "Disco". I decided it wasn't quite my style (i.e. chickened out) and we went back home. Is it just me or does a rave inside of a storage warehouse seem shady?

day 20

Work was enjoyable today, followed by an inebriated "LIPS" session. Next Friday we plan to try out one of Little Rock's bars in the River Market district.

day 19

Gas is $2.35 at the stations near our house.

I worked as a newsie today (newsy?!). I was surprised how many people on campus were willing to take a paper. Some of them even seemed excited. One older gentleman was sitting on the stairs on one of the higher floors of Stabler Hall staring into the cityscape, and when I asked about his interest in taking a paper he perked up, and gladly took one. He also inquired if I was writing for the paper, and asked for my name so he could look up my article. Incidentally, I ran into him later in the day and he remebered my name -- I wonder if he is a professor...

day 18

My birthday! Also the birthday of our family's newest member, Maeve.

I worked from 9 to sometime after 7 --- then Alicia and I went to Senor Tequila's where I wore the large birthday sombrero.

Also we now have internet! And Alicia began orientation for Best Buy.

day 17

Tomorrow is my birthday! The first issue of the Forum that I have contributed to, comes out tomorrow. I am nervous about my Journalistic Freedom class, since it is a grad level class, there may be a great deal of work.

I am going to write an article about "Breaking Bad" for this next issue of the Forum, since there is no news to cover for my beat.

day 16

I worked for 11.5 hours today, my feet have never hurt so much, but work was and is always, fun. Alicia and I picked up a water pitcher from Walgreen's with a built in filter. It is well made and sports some nice shades of blue.

day 15

Today was a tourist day for Alicia and me. We spent some time in the River Market district of Little Rock. It is an upscale commercial district which houses the Clinton Presidential Library, the Museum of Discovery, and a large variety of American and ethnic bars. We attended the Museum of Discovery, which is running its "Alice in Wonderland" exhibit until September 6th. The exhibit contained many impressive "illusions", such as a room that became smaller as you progressed through it.

We ate dinner at SeƱor Tequila's, which is located in the same shopping mall as Textbook Brokers. They have wonderful (and inexpensive!) food and alcoholic beverages, as well as a mariaci band that plays from 6 to 9 every Sunday. They were fantastic, and they roam the restaurant with their bajo sexto, viol de gambo, and violin, harmonizing and filling the well-lit rooms with pleasant, rich tones.

day 13

Today I worked for almost 10 hours. It was steady and enjoyable, and Alicia got to stop by my work today and pick up her Biostats book for a great price.

I am hoping to experience some of the Little Rock night life once we are more financially settled. There are seemingly interesting bars around here. A mexican restaurant and bar by Textbook Brokers has a free mariaci band every Sunday night. I hope to go this Sunday.

Tiny has some scabs on her back and we are worried about her, we are hypothesizing ways to moisturize her better.

We found out that one of the tree roots in our yard may have gone through the large pipe running underground. We have had multiple rooters stop by.

day 12

Lethargic. I never had coffee today, and I have felt it all day. I have felt one step behind the world around me.

I witnessed more of Arkansas' natural beauty today. Standing on the open ramp of the 7th floor of Stabler Hall the rain covered the vast sprawl of Little Rock in an aquatic blanket. It was breathtaking.

day 11

Tomorrow is the first day of school!

I have three classes tomorrow, then I will head over to Textbook Brokers to work until 7 p.m. Today I worked from 10 to 7. I found two of Alicia's books for her, which will end up saving her over $100.

Alicia treated me to Waffle House, which was delicious. We ordered the double buttermilk waffle ($3.65, only $1 more than a single waffle) and triple hashbrowns, which are only $2.20. Waffle House is the world's leading server of REAL hashbrowns.

day 10

My news beat for this semester is to cover UALR's SGA (Student Government Association). They are currently hosting a canned food drive that will last till November First. The goal is to raise 12,000 canned goods.

Alicia was hired at Best Buy! Although she still has to pass the drug & background check, so let's not get our hopes up.

My co-workers at Textbook Brokers ordered a cheese pizza especially for me today, since they know I am a vegetarian. That made me smile.

Also my drums are set up! The mini bop kit sounds great in our large living room with hardwood floors.

day 9

Alicia and I have learned that we have no mechanical inclanation involving bikes. After multiple trips to Wal-Mart and hours of labor her bike is now in rideable shape. I refuse to ever touch it again.

day 8

Today was uneventful for me, but Alicia has another interview at Best Buy tomorrow! I believe she will be hired. The employees at Best Buy were surprised at how knowledgeable she was about computers.

I work tomorrow at 9 a.m.

There is a very pesky fly in our house we have been trying to catch for at least a day. It is becoming a significant nuisance. As I am writing this, Alicia has trapped it in the bathroom and is trying to find it.

day 7

Things you will not find in Little Rock: an abundance of McDonald's, a Dunkin' Donuts, a SpeedWay, a Dairy Queen, a BP gas staion, or a Menards.

Things you will find in Little Rock: Helpful, friendly people who are in no hurry to push you out the door, and roadways that would make Dale Earnhardt smile.

Today in our local Walgreens, the manager stopped us in the wine section, I assumed he was going to card us. This was not true. Instead he took the time to recommend his favorite wine of the selection, and inform us about its winery, which is a few hours away. He also described the local church and restaurants in Altus, Arkansas, where 3 wineries exist.

Work went well, I love being surrounded by books, and my attention to detail is paying off. I just have to stay focused because next week (the starting week of school) will be extremely hectic. Any mistake could mean a big financial loss for the store, and I do not want to see that, as I really look up to, and appreciate the company of, the people I work for.

Alicia has an interview at Best Buy tomorrow!

day 6

Today was my first day of work at Textbook Brokers, which lasted from 9:25 a.m. to 4:40 p.m. (approximately). It is a hectic, trial-by-fire workplace, but all the workers are very friendly and the boss means business but he has a kind heart. I enjoyed working and the time passed very quickly. Tomorrow we have a meeting at 9 a.m.

Alicia and I had an incredible experience at Wal-Mart. We were studying the ingredients of a Tony's pizza, and discovered that it contained rennet. I could attempt to furnish an explanation of why we do not eat rennet, but a Google search would explain the substance better than I could. We placed the pizza back in the freezer and chorused, "I wish we could eat that". A lady near us overheard and said, "Would you like me to treat you to a pizza?". I was flabbergasted at her generosity.

I suppose that was "southern hospitality".

day 5

I got a job!

Ok, it is not quite as exciting as it seems--the position is probably temporary. But, if I excel ("am a benefit and not just a body" according to Jeremy, the friendly boss) the position could be permanent. I also signed up for a bank account since the job uses direct deposit (and charges processing if you want a paper check).

I start work tomorrow.

Alicia is still looking for a job, but I know she will find one soon.

day 4

Today, our refridgerator arrived (a Whirlpool), and we stocked it up. After some deliberation, and unnecessary driving, we found Kroger's--an upscale southern version of Jewel, which is under the Albertson's umbrella.

I found a possible job lead at Textbook Brokers--a store specializing in books for UALR courses. Hopefully, I will hear from them soon.

I also discovered that our house is all electric, and that will consolidate our utilities. I had to cancel the appointment for the gas-man (technician would be more accurate, but far less funny) to set our gas up (ha) tomorrow.

day 3

Today I stepped foot on UALR's gorgeous campus. I rode my bike to campus (a 5 minute trip) and attended both an advisement meeting, and the introductory meeting of the "Forum" (UALR's student newspaper).

The advisement meeting was quick, and brought me to full-time hours (12 credits). But I hope to consolidate my classes if openings appear in more opportune sessions.

I am excited to write for the "Forum", but I hope I can establish a strong presence. The staff seems friendly, but they also seem to promote on a basis of familiarity rather than experience.

Our house is large (1100 square feet according to our realtor), and although it could use a new coat of paint, it has a nice layout and charm.

day 2

Wow. We are finally moved in, and a quarter of the way unpacked.

I have a small "taste" of Little Rock after today, and I do like it so far. It is unlike any city I have ever seen. Winding roads rapidly ascend and descend nestled in an arboreal landscape. Many things have an angelic glow to them: the shopping karts at walgreens, as well as all the drinks in their freezer. Many of the roads have a brown tinge not unlike clay. The general populous seems less in a hurry, and will take the time to choose their words. They also seem to be far more soft spoken than the "Northerners" I know.

Tomorrow I will meet with the Mass Communications adviser, and attend the first meeting of the newspaper. I am excited to finally enter the campus.

day 1

550.5 miles have been covered today. We have a 16 foot Penske Truck, and Alicia's Dodge Neon. The day was largely uneventful and the traveling efficient. I will post pictures when I have my computer set up.

We ate at the waffle house by our inn, and bickering in the kitchen was responsible for an interminable wait.

The Arkansas Welcome Center was gorgeous, it had a wooden cabin feel, and very up-to-date finishings.

Tomorrow we will finally see our house...
